Not everything can go in the truck. Here's the list of items no reputable Vermont junk hauler will take — and exactly where to drop them off legally.

By law, there are certain items no reputable Vermont junk hauler will touch. If a hauler tells you they'll "just throw it in" — run the other way. That's how people end up with EPA fines, contaminated dump sites, or unsafe loads on the road.
Here's what we can't take, and exactly where to drop these items instead.
Why we can't take it: Hazardous waste rules under Vermont's Universal Recycling Law.
Where to bring it: Vermont has a free program called PaintCare — over 90 drop-off sites statewide accept latex and oil-based paint at no charge. For chemicals, contact your local Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event.
Why we can't take it: Explosive risk, and disposal facilities won't accept them mixed with regular waste.
Where to bring it: Most Vermont propane suppliers (Suburban, AmeriGas, Blue Rhino) will take back empty tanks. Some transfer stations accept them separately.
Why we can't take it: Federal EPA rules require certified asbestos abatement contractors.
Where to bring it: Hire a licensed asbestos removal company — never DIY. The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation lists certified contractors.
Why we can't take it: Biohazard rules for sharps; DEA rules for prescription drugs.
Where to bring it: Most Vermont pharmacies (CVS, Kinney Drugs) have drug take-back programs. Sharps go to designated hospital drop-off boxes. Never put either in the trash.
Why we can't take it: Explosive risk plus federal ATF rules.
Where to bring it: Vermont State Police accepts ammunition and expired flares at any barracks. Some local police departments also have drop-off programs.
